Chennai... one of the most beautiful cities of India... one of the greenest.

Over the past few years, unauthorised hoardings have blemished the city skyline... hiding most of the lovely landmarks behind huge scaffoldings and banners. These unauthorised hoardings took over the sidewalks, the parks, even roads... putting the citizens to great hardship. A strong lobby ensured that these hoardings stayed on year after year, government after government.

Our Chief Minister has personally taken on this lobby and finally with the supreme court order, has ordered the removal of these huge, ugly blemishes.

This is a non-political "Thank You Chief Minister"... from a citizen.

As the hoardings have come down, so many of the beautiful landmarks have come to view... the high court buildings, the music academy, the beautiful old trees of panagal park, so many old temples and churches...

Please sign in with your comments if you feel that the removal of these hoardings have been good for Chennai... and ask as many of your friends as you can to sign in.

I am very happy that the government under the able leadership of our honorable chief minister Shri karunandihi has taken bold initiatives in removing the hoardings which has made our Chennai regain its lost soul. Earlier we the citizens were provided beautiful green parks in each locality of our Chennai. My locality has a park in Haddows road, Nungambakkam. Unfortunately the officers who have to maintain this park, which is the vision of our honorable chief minister are not focussed in this maintainence at all. The Haddows road park in Nungambakkam is losing its sheen day by day for which the blame directly lies with these officers. I wish these officers who are far younger in age to our honorable chief minister have atleast some of the energy, strength & vision that our honorable chief mininister has in this age. I wish these officers learn at least a little from our honorable chief minister. kudos to our honorable chief minister.

Few months ago alongwith others, I congratulated our Hon.Chief Minister, Dr.Kalaigner Karunanithi for his wonderful and bold step for the removal of Hordings. Though Hordings doesnot appear again, we see posters and cut-outs,mini and maxi in sizes mainly by political parties. If this is also weeded out, CHENNAI will be still more bright and wonderful. Hope, for this slso our Chief Minister would take all initiative. Thank You Chief Minister

I remember seeing the vintage chennai photographs. I always wondered when can I see the beautiful buildings of chennai without the hoarding screen. At last my dream come true. Not only that, I also wish to thank (non-political) our CM for the following things in chennai. 1. More and more Bridges and road infrastructure. 2. Shifting of Vegetable market and Bus stand out from parry's corner. 3. Beautiful ECR 4. Replacing Kannagi statue at the beach. 5. Bringing more companies(Automobile/IT) to the city Along with this I have a minimal request to the govt. to filter the Real estate price hikes which are way too high for a normal middle class people. Just not the slum clearance but also the Housing board should understand the raising need of shelter for the people of Tamilnadu/Chennai. Thanks to all your efforts.

Today morning on our way to office we took an auto which we daily do. We daily have to negotiate with autowallas to pay 35 rupees from T nager to smith lane in whites road. Teh actual meter charge is 21-22 only. Today as usual we negotiated and got into an auto(Number TN07 D4525). The autowalla dint take us inside the smith road, even though we mentioned it earlier to him. On telling him that we wil give him only 30 rupees he spat on me! Is the government sleeping, do they consider it as a way to empower the autowallas, allowing them to loot people.?? Is this the way to gather votes?? IS there anyone who can listen to requests - or the chennai people/ government want to sleep and let these guys do whatever they want to!!

I had written earlier thanking you for the pulling down of the hoardings and restoring the city. Meanwhile I would like to bring to light the hardships faced by road users because of the negligent and rash driving of buses and taxis on the OMR. These vehicles largely run for the IT companies and colleges wherein the drivers compete and reign the road as long as they are in their seats. Its very difficult for private cars and motorcycles to ply along with them since they do not hesitate to bump into anyone and common people cannot fight on the roads and claim anything from them. One of my colleagues' car was hit and he had to follow the bus who then directed him to take the car for repairs somewhere far off from the city. The traffic police too seem to be a silent spectator, looking totally handicapped at the crude behaviour of these drivers. I humbly seek your intervention in curbing this menance on the OMR by advising for some informal check on these behaviours of these contract carriers. These vehicles mostly belong to Sathyabama Eng College, TCS, CTS,and other eng colleges. Any effort from the governments' side would save a lot of lives

Respected Dr. Kalaignar, Thank you for your sincere efforts in making Chennai the most beautiful city in India. It would be great if trees on the roads are pruned periodically and the Cooum river is made clean so that water transport is possible. Neel Metal Fanalca has not been as effective as Onyx in clearing garbage. Please instruct the concerned officials about this. We thank you for all that you have done for our wonderful state. Kindly also explore the possibility of an underground metro rail system in Chennai to ease the traffic congestion.

Thanks for the good work.Service roads adjascent to flyovers are being widened by acquiring a few feet of private area for the common good. Same thing may be done for very narrow roads like Ramakrishna Mutt Road from Mandaveli Post Office to Mandaveli Bus Terminus, Santome High Road from Santome Church to Foreshore Estate Arch. Owners of buildings on both sides of the road may be requested to part with land after a decent (market rate) compensation is paid. Encroachments (Hutments and slums)along the bank of Buckingham Canal are also to be removed and the canal made clean and navigable like it has been done in some european cities. Passeger Barge service may be considered on the sea routes within Chennai and from Chennai to other nearby coastal towns. It will be a tourist attraction apart from relieving road congestion.

Nalladhu yar moolam, eppadi nadandhalum paratuvadhu thamizhar panpadu.Oruvarin vazhvil matravarin thazhvum ulladhu. We should see if in general the whole show is good for the city and society.I do agree thousands have become jobless, but the greenery of the city is more important--pure atmosphere should be the first in this polluted city, then the arrogant occupation of several foot paths and road sides have also to be considered.Even in arrack shops thousands are working--and one should not feel soory for the workers if they become jobless due to toal prohibition if enforced in future. So we should see the percentage of goodness in any order passed by any Govt. rather than feeling sorry for the jobless one involved in illegal/unethical works.Let us cogratulate the Govt. for the bold step and at the same time expect and plead our Govt. to give a better job option and living for our brothers.Any how dear C.M. ur good work is applauded and we also expect u to do something for the daily bread of our affected brothers.JAI HIND.

We are truly appreciative of the removal of the hoardings - airflow has improved in our flat, it is wonderful to see greenery instead of static, sometimes idiotic ads, there is less distraction on the roads, and people who whine about revenue loss should think about the advantages to ordinary citizens. You can find another revenue-source - we can't find greenery elsewhere.

Many trees are seen now and the city is looking green by making more than one lakh people jobless. Thanks to our cm. I feel this was the only hinderance in the development of our city and has been wiped out completely. There are so many political banners in tamil nadu, are they not obstructing traffic and public? are they beautifying the city? there are huge hoardings, transformers, cable tv wires and so many digged out pavements where will the public walk? now that hoardings are axed can the public walk easily? Its just an eyewash. As the entire media industry is with political giants and the only media which they were not present was outdoor, henceforth it becomes history and very soon this media will also be at the mercy of these political giants. A criminal being convicted and given a death sentence there are so many public activist and social groups who plead for its mercy, now that more than one lakh people are rendered jobless is it not the concern of the public, social activist groups and government to help them by regulating the industry and giving back their jobs to them. The world famous Times square is famous only on account of its lights and glitter created by the advertisment hoardings and billboards. The entire world is bright and colourful with advertisement hoardings and billboards with the lights on it. But we like our city to be dark and non illuminated as we already witness the before and after effects of hoardings removal. The industry which existed for more then 4 decades has suddenly been wiped out overnight under the guise of illegal and unauthorized hoardings. Every industry has its own pro's & con's hence well regulated and ethical industries are the order of the day.

I too read in one of the junior vikatans edition, coz we all get news and update ourselves by these magazines i would like to update here that the grandson of cm is to pair with one of the leading ad agencies in mumbai which has kept its foot in chennai and select spots to put up hoardings of smaller sizes and an eyewash tender is to be called for by the collectorate office in which all others will be ignored other than the favorites. This plan was there during the last leg of their regim they had last term.As for the bus shelters there was a tender called for 4months back and only one agency had submitted their tender(not ADLABS) but suddenly how did adlabs enter this is a questionable debate>>...??? I too appriciate the work of govt on this but as to many interlinked issues we are kept in dark.......

This is one of a good move by our honourable Chief Minister. Now chennai looks more beauty than later. Chennai will be more happy,If our CM is able to clear all the unwanted Posters, Platform shops around chennai. Also will more happy if he take care to clear the traffic in city.

as mentioned in one of the messages,if there is some inside story as to why the hoardings were removed, why does he not share it with the others...when the chief minister's office read this page, let them know the public perception...if there is any truth in the inside story, hopefully they will realise that the public is on to their plans....and the hoardings will not come back again.:-)

The government always have the habit of waiting till the last minute to do things. The previous message reads " Hawkers and encroachers were removed, My simple question is why the hell do they allow them to settle there first??? why cant they remove them at the outset itself??? dont they have enough people to do it or are they not watching all this from the beginning?? or are they waiting for any collection from them and if they do not get whar they desired for they then come all of a sudden and start removing them???
Date: Wed May 7 02:37:37 2008

lalith
I too think the same is going to befall chennai. The hawkers and slums were not routed fully and even if they were, they were given an alternate place to settle.According to the news from corporation or the collectorate 3-4years ago,and evidences of news articles says that the outdoor association ppeople had approached the government to regularise the trade which was neglected or fell in to deaf ears coz the revenue officers were minting money from the owners of hoardings. Why cant this goven be open and regularise this trade???
Date: Wed May 7 02:28:12 2008

sairam
I think that the person who has commented to my message does not know the inside story. Pl wait and see my friend you will repent for what you have written now coz in a few days they are going to monopolise this trade for their family and come back in the name of regularising the trade.
Date: Wed May 7 02:23:08 2008

the removal of hoardings has been like giving chennai a new lease of life...it looks much brighter and greener.the previous two messages talk about not bothering about chennai having greenery or not..or the that its been done for political reasons..there are people in the trade who have been affected...but that is true of any other clean up that has to be done..if the hawkers are removed from the roads and payments, there will be thousands affected..so the government should do nothing?? if the encroachments on the adyar and cooum is removed ,again thousands will be affected..so should the govt do nothing???as chennaiites, i think a majority of us welcome the removal of the hoardings..
Date: Wed May 7 02:17:26 2008

sairam
I too agree with what pal says.We are not bothered whether chennai has got the greenery or not, If hoardings are the only obstructions then now after removing them why does the government allow political billboards to spring up.They did not get what they wanted so they revenged the people in this trade.God is one who watches things silently. They have killed a trade which had given life to lakhs of poor people, They could have been true to themselves by regularising the trade. It is all for personal benefit and family business development.

I think these messages arer an eye wash done for gaining political milage.Read the message written by karthikeyan and arvind. these are the same messages written under different names by the same person.Dont you think this is absolute rubbish and nonsense. This shows how people or politicians go to such an extent to gain name and fame.Any way we are not fools. The cm will get his own grand son in to this business after all this dies down. People dont be carried away by all these. They bild family business.

It is nice to see greenery around and facade of buildings. However who are we kidding?? Thousands of people have lost their livelihoods. The whole thing will be back in a while with a benami of political bigwigs who will call the shots and have everything routed thru them.So lets not fool ourselves. Let there be strict regulation for putting up sites and let it be transperant.Till now how many politicos itself have filled their own pockets thru hoardings. They themselves have made huge monies till now. They obviously will not suffer. Also while all this is being done, there is garbage all over the streets. Neel Metal Fanalca is doing quite a pathetic job of keeping thecity clean. Their bins are so small that garbage is always thrown near the bins on the roads and all bins lie there overturned at most times. Also what about the sidewalks near the airport, why hasn't anybody removed those. Why are they being given opportunity to continue?? So while we welcome the fact that the city looks definitely better, please answer all the questions put forward in this email. Also please ban political cutouts being put up everytime. It is such an eyesore!

Mr. Suresh, Appreciate your innovative portal. Well, I think the Government should first worked on Traffic regulation, and educate people on their contribution to keep the city clean - eradicate spitting, litering, using public places as lavatory, and civic sense, than taking off the Hoarding. though Hoarding open up to greenery, there is no civic sense maintained. Wish the government impose strict rules and penalise public create " Clean Chennai". Mr. CM, would request you to take atleast 1% initiative to begin with...

Great work on the hoardings front by removing all illegal hoardings. Will the government remove all the footpath / pavement vendors with the same zeal. It is a step in the positive direction.Citizens contribution and participation with the governmental support could go a long way in making chennai a model city and an envious place to live in. Attention also needs to be directed into getting the side walks cleaned of all the rubble and encroachment and make them pleasurable walkways they are intended for. people living in the respective streets should also be made accountable and help in this endevour. government alone cannot. Keep it up and thanks for directing the way forward

Dear Chief Minister, Thanky you very much for takin a very bold step. Chennai looks much greener and more beautiful than ever. My further request is that no permission for any size or any kind of hoarding should be given as it would once again pave way for unauthorized hoardings., court orders etc.. It is so wonderful to rediscover the old ‘Madras’ – a charm that had gradually disappeared over the last few years with the mushrooming of unauthorized hoardings. Just when it seemed that we had surrendered to the profligate commercialism of the Corporates, we have had justice delivered through the good offices of the Chief Minister. I urge the honorable Chief Minister to take this further to ban wall posters and graffiti that mar much of Chennai’s compound walls.

Honourable Chief Minister Thiru. Kalainzhar Karunanidhi, Under your able leadership, Tamil Nadu State is making rapid progress. I wish to congratulate you for making Chennai a better city by ordering removal of illegal and ugly hoardings in the city. They were really eyesore. The city looks much better and I hope your Government will continue the drive to improve the quality of life of urban people. May I make a few suggestions for your kind consideration ? • There must be atleast 3-4 feet wide footpath on all roads of Chennai for safety of the pedestrians Under no circumstances, there should be any encroachment on the footpath. In the absence of the footpath, pedestrians are forced to walk on the road exposing themselves to danger of accident. • The city of Chennai must have working signals on all major road junctions to regulate the vehicular traffic. All signals must have display timers also. • Zebra crossing (white stripes) on all signals is necessary which will be forcing people to cross the roads only on zebra crossing. I am sure your Government will consider and implement the above suggestions. Wishing you a good health, With best regards Nitin Palany

All signals must have display timers also. • Zebra crossing (white stripes) on all signals is necessary which will be forcing people to cross the roads only on zebra crossing. I am sure your Government will consider and implement the above suggestions. Wishing you a good health, With best regards Nitin Palany

Well... only half the work is done by the removal of hoardings which as a citizen of Chennai I deeply appreciate. But the most important and complementing part of this campaign must be to augment greenery everywhere in every way possible in Chennai and Tamilnadu leaving a precious legacy for the future generations inculcating in them a love for nature which will in turn make them better humanbeings as well!!!

dear cm its awesome to cruise through chennai after the wonderful job of removing the very artificial look in the hoardings, likewise may i ask the cm to take care of one more thing, which is to provide urinal and toilet facility on all street ends and to ensure all commercial establishments to provide the same at their premisses as that would certainly take care of the cleaning of such menace

I'm happy to see Chennai without hoardings. I discover lots of new places now a days(which were hidden). But little disappointed that Chennai is no more "Hoarding City of India".

First let me thank Suresh Chandra Menon for recognizing the need to thank the CM. The CM has been doing such tremendous service to the State but unfortunately we alas are a thankless citizenry. Removal of hoardings is a monumental acheivement. It has had very positive socio-environmental implications on the health and mind of the city dweller. The city is saved of the heat radiation from the tons of steel girders that go into erecting them. Then the city has become visibly more greener and there is more wind ciculation within the city - these hoarding were such an obstruction and an eye sore corrupting young minds and distracting drivers. Last but not the least electric power which was wasted for illuminating these hoarding has been saved in a power starved Tamil Nadu. Thanks Mr. Karunanidhi.
